What could the newly proposed European Innovation Act mean for European companies, researchers, and innovation ecosystems in practice?

Europe is home to world-class research and innovation, but it still struggles to turn promising ideas into successful products, services and globally competitive companies. Despite strong scientific capabilities, many innovative companies face barriers when commercialising research, scaling new technologies, and expanding across the Single Market. To address these challenges, the European Commission has proposed the European Innovation Act. The proposed Act will promote a common EU framework for valuing intellectual property (IP), including patents, and create a digital marketplace for licensing and trading IP assets. It will also strengthen public procurement of innovation through common EU rules for R&D procurement, making it easier for startups and other innovative companies to commercialise research and scale across the Single Market.

Against this background, the European Cluster Collaboration Platform (ECCP), on behalf of the European Commission, is organising the EU Industry Talk “Closing Europe’s innovation gap - What the European Innovation Act could mean for industry” on 23 September, from 08:30 to 10:00 CEST (online). The session will explore what the Act could mean in practice for European industry and innovation ecosystems, with a focus on the barriers to innovation, commercialisation, and scale-up. It will bring together representatives from industry and R&I ecosystems to discuss topics including access to research commercialisation, innovation-friendly procurement, and the conditions needed to help innovative companies grow.
