The National Machinery Cluster to Develop Five Areas, Including Nuclear and Hydrogen.

OSTRAVA, October 24, 2024 – The National Engineering Cluster (NSK), which has been supporting engineers across the Czech Republic for 20 years, has prepared a strategy for the coming years. It will focus on hydrogen technologies, nuclear energy, innovative and specialized technologies, automation and robotics in engineering, and transport engineering. The cluster consistently maintains over forty members. “In each section, there is a natural leader in the field responsible for its development. For hydrogen, this is Vítkovice Cylinders, and Professor Ivo Hlavatý from the Technical University of Ostrava will take charge of the nuclear energy section,” explained NSK President Jan Světlík.

The cluster's goal is to strengthen member companies by aligning with trends in the evolving engineering sector and global business. Therefore, supported areas include smart systems and artificial intelligence. Currently, well-established larger companies and research institutions are at the forefront.

To promote the development of hydrogen technologies, an H2 showroom will be established in the Vítkovice district of Ostrava, close to NSK’s headquarters. This project is a collaboration between the mentioned company, Vítkovice Cylinders, and other firms active in various areas of hydrogen technology, such as Vítkovice and Vítkovice IT Solutions. Other partners are also being invited to participate.

The showroom aims to showcase hydrogen (H2) as a key element of the future, to eliminate fears, break down barriers, introduce H2 technologies, and guide visitors through the journey of hydrogen from production to use. A renovation project for a selected building near Mírové Square in Ostrava-Vítkovice is underway to host the showroom. Preparations for the exhibit’s future components are also in progress, which will include real technologies and their components, functional systems, and visual presentations of hydrogen technologies—from smart storage to energy systems and transportation.

The transformation of traditional industry affects the entire Czech Republic, but it is particularly emphasized in the Moravian-Silesian Region, the home of NSK. Approximately 141,000 active businesses were identified in the region this year. Among them, over 25,000 are small and medium-sized enterprises (with fewer than 250 employees). There are around 300 large corporations, while the remainder are small businesses and firms with minimal staff. This year, the situation has significantly complicated for some corporations and smaller companies, especially the Liberty steelworks and its suppliers. An “energy revolution” is also on the horizon. To ensure that these changes become opportunities rather than threats for the industry, legislators must avoid hampering engineers, and engineers themselves must not be held back by fear of robotics and artificial intelligence, as NSK members previously agreed.
